Measuring guide
Most storage that disappoints was simply the wrong size. Five minutes with a tape measure fixes that. Measure in centimetres, write the numbers down, then compare them with the width (W), depth (D) and height (H) on the product page.
1. Width (W)
Measure inside the frame at the narrowest point: hinge to hinge, or wall to wall. Don't measure the door opening; hinges and frames usually stick in further than you expect.
2. Depth (D)
From the back wall to the inside of the closed door. Under a sink, measure to the pipes and the waste trap instead, and note how far in from the side they sit.
3. Height (H)
Shelf to shelf, or floor to the underside of the worktop. Then take some off: you need room to lift a lid, tip a container or pull a basket out.
4. Doors, hinges and pull-outs
Check that the door still closes with the product in place, and that a pull-out basket has room to slide forward past the hinges. For over-door organisers, measure the door's thickness and the gap behind it.
5. Wardrobes and under the bed
For hanging organisers, measure the hanging height from the rail down. For under-bed bags, measure the clearance from the floor to the bed frame, not the mattress.
